Victorian Codd Marble Pendant

This pendant features a rare piece of sea glass. A beautifully frosted, genuine, aqua marble, nestled in a handcrafted sterling silver setting adorned with delicate leafy details.
I found this sea marble myself, nested among the pebbles during one of my coastal treasure hunts here in the UK. It’s the kind of discovery that makes your heart skip a beat.

But this isn’t just any glass marble. It’s a Codd marble, once part of a 19th-century bottle designed to keep fizzy drinks fresh. Back then, soda and mineral water were sealed inside thick glass bottles using a glass marble and a rubber washer. The pressure of the carbonation pushed the marble up into the neck of the bottle to seal it tightly. To drink from it, people would press the marble down, sometimes breaking the neck in the process. As a result, intact marbles were often tossed away and eventually made their way into the sea.
Over a century later, the ocean has done its quiet work, smoothing and frosting the glass into this ethereal orb of soft seafoam green.

The pendant hangs on a sterling silver chain, letting the sea glass rest just at the heart. Whether you’re drawn to its history, its natural beauty, or the symbolism of transformation, this piece carries a sense of wonder and the whispers of the sea.
