Hallmarking in the UK: The Quiet Mark of Precious Metal

Hallmarking in the UK: The Quiet Mark of Precious Metal

If you look closely at a ring and notice tiny stamps pressed into the metal, you are seeing something powerful.

Not decoration.
Not trend.
But protection.

Hallmarks are the UK’s official way of verifying that gold and silver jewellery is exactly what it claims to be.

As a jeweller working in solid sterling silver and solid gold here in Essex, this matters deeply to me. When you invest in precious metal, you deserve certainty.

What Is Hallmarking?

Hallmarking is the independent testing and official stamping of precious metals to confirm their purity.

In the UK, this is governed by the Hallmarking Act 1973. It is a legal requirement designed to protect buyers and maintain trust in the jewellery industry.

If a piece is described as:

  • Sterling silver — it must contain at least 92.5% pure silver (marked 925)

  • 9ct gold — 37.5% pure gold (375)

  • 14ct gold — 58.5% pure gold (585)

  • 18ct gold — 75% pure gold (750)

These numbers are standards of purity, not decorative details.

Who Hallmarks Jewellery in the UK?

Jewellery is independently tested and hallmarked by official assay offices:

  • Assay Office London

  • Assay Office Birmingham

  • Assay Office Sheffield

  • Assay Office Edinburgh

When a piece meets the legal requirements, it is submitted to one of these offices, where the metal is tested and officially stamped.

A full UK hallmark typically includes:

  • The maker’s registered mark

  • The fineness mark (925, 375, 585, 750, etc.)

  • The assay office symbol

  • Sometimes a date letter

It is independent verification of authenticity.

How I Hallmark My Jewellery

All of my solid gold pieces are fully hallmarked in accordance with UK law. Gold always carries a full official hallmark.

For sterling silver, UK law requires hallmarking when a piece weighs over 7.78 grams.

Many of my silver designs are sculptural and intentionally refined, and some fall below this legal threshold. In those cases, they are not automatically submitted for full assay hallmarking.

However, I do stamp my silver rings with a 925 mark to confirm they are made from genuine sterling silver. I work exclusively with solid precious metals, and material integrity is non-negotiable for me.

If you would prefer your silver piece to carry a full official UK hallmark regardless of weight, I am very happy to arrange this. Your jewellery can be submitted to a UK assay office for testing and hallmarking for an additional fee to cover the process.

If this is important to you, simply get in touch before purchasing and we can organise it.

Transparency matters. Precious metal should never feel uncertain.

Why Hallmarking Matters

Hallmarking protects you from plated jewellery being misrepresented as solid gold or silver.

It protects independent jewellers who invest in genuine materials.

And it preserves the integrity and value of precious metal itself.

When you choose solid gold or solid sterling silver, you are choosing permanence. Hallmarking ensures that permanence is real.

A Small Stamp with Weight

Hallmarks are often hidden inside a band or along the edge of a pendant.

They are subtle. Quiet.

But they carry centuries of British craftsmanship and accountability.

When you wear gold or silver, you are wearing something enduring.

And whether marked 925 or carrying a full official UK hallmark, your piece is created with intention, integrity and respect for the craft.
